Facial rejuvenation surgery · short-scar techniques and their reach · the neck assessment that decides the plan
Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.
His assessment starts at the neck rather than at the scar, because the neck is what a short-scar lift cannot reach and therefore what most often decides whether the smaller operation is the right one. He establishes where the laxity actually sits, how much of the change is descent and how much is volume or skin, and what the tissue has already been through. Where the neck is the complaint, he says the smaller operation will not answer it and offers the plan that will. Where a patient is being offered the smaller operation because it is easier to sell than to justify, he names that too. He also tells every patient considering a short-scar lift what the per-operation risks are at this size, because they are not smaller.
Clinical focus
Smaller is a measurement, not a promise
The word describes an incision and a treated area. It does not describe the anaesthetic, the risk attached to one operation, the weeks before the face reads as settled, or the size of the decision. A patient who chooses the smaller operation because it sounds like a smaller decision has been misled by the vocabulary, and the correction belongs in the consultation rather than in the recovery.
